The Aviva Ladies Cycle Tour passed along the B 1113 New Buckenham to Norwich road, through Fundenhall and Ashwellthorpe, on Stage 1 of this Cycle Tour (Race!) from Southwold in Suffolk to the finish at Norwich. Here are some photographs of the event in Ashwellthorpe
The breakaway leader approaches behind the Police Car and support vehicle. The adjoining roads were all shut off by police motorcycle outriders – the spectators commented that they did not know Norfolk possessed so many police motorcyclists as there was a constant stream in relay formation closing the roads!
The leader through Ashwellthorpe was an American – Alison Tetrick – who had made a breakaway from the Peleton with about 20kms to go to the finishing line. Here she was about 1min. 45 secs. in front with 6kms to go but from Ashwellthorpe onwards, the Peleton slowly began to catch up and she was over-run by the other cyclists in the last kilometre. At the finish outside Norwich City Hall, she was classified 8th and won the Combativity Award for her brave solo break.
