My husband and I will be visiting Norfolk in the week of June 13th. We live in Virginia in the USA. We would very much like to visit All Saints in Ashwellthorpe to view the Thorpe and Tilney tombs of my ancestors. Please kindly advise me as to times that the church might be open. Thank you so much for your assistance.

Greetings Mrs Sayers. I am one of the administrators for this, our village, website and also have a great interest in our village’s history (known as the “village historian”) so I am replying to your request. It is usual for All Saints’ Church in Ashwellthorpe to be open from 10.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. daily between Easter and the end of October each year – I am awaiting confirmation that this will be the case this year and will confirm asap. The opening/closing of the church is done by a rota of volunteers.

You will find more about the de Thorp tomb on the Community Information > Local History page and about the Ashwellthorpe Triptych on the Community Information > Churches > All Saints’ Ashwellthorpe page – if you haven’t looked at both pages already. Regarding your June visit – we are having an Open Gardens weekend on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June when several gardens in the village will be open to visitors, including some near the church and some with refreshments on offer, and I believe the Church will be having some part to play in this Open weekend as well. I will come back to you with confirmation about opening hours and I will also look through all my papers on the de Thorp family and successors in case there is something of interest to you. I will use my personal email address for this purpose. Hope the above is helpful in planning your visit to Ashwellthorpe Jennifer Robbie
