THEFT OF LEAD FROM THE THORP CHAPEL ROOF at ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH, ASHWELLTHORPE – TUESDAY 1 NOVEMBER 2016

Just a few days before the Gift Day held at the Church on Saturday 5 November 2016, some of the lead was stolen – overnight on Tuesday 1 November – from the roof of the Thorp Chapel on the north side of the Church building. The theft was noticed the next morning which enabled the police and insurance company to be advised immediately and for a temporary weather cover to be erected to avoid further water damage. A Faculty is now being sought from the Diocese to replace the lead with terne-coated stainless steel.

All Saints Church, Ashwellthorpe – GIFT DAY 5th November 2016

Dear Friends, All Saints church has stood at the east end of the village for centuries, a constant reminder of all that is good in this ever-changing world. We, as a village, need to keep this building in good order as a tribute to the work and craftsmanship of the original builders and those who have maintained it over the centuries.

Every five years the church is thoroughly inspected by the church architect and instructions for work to be carried out are given. The urgent priority this time is to repair areas of the roof and tower and make them sound and also waterproof. An estimated cost of around £60,000 is expected. Therefore, so that the church may be open for prayer, for visits and our usual services and continue to be available for baptisms, weddings and funerals, we are asking if you wold like to share the costs of looking after this priceless village asset by making a cash donation. We will be applying for any grants that might be available and hosting fund raising events. In return for your support, we will keep you informed of how we use the money raised. If you are a U.K. taxpayer you may “gift aid” your donation so that All Saints may claim back the income tax which you have already paid on this amount.

How can you make a donation?

Please place your donation in an envelope (cheques made payable to “Upper Tas Valley All Saints PCC” – Ashwellthorpe church has a fabric fund within the main PCC account and any donation will be restricted to the intended use,

We are holding a “Gift Day Coffee Morning” at the church on Saturday 5th November 10.00 am – 12 noon, when you can bring your donation and eat delicious cake while looking round this beautiful church, admiring the historic alabaster tomb of Edmund de Thorp and the copy of the famous Ashwellthorpe Triptych. We will also have a copy of the architect’s report available if you wish to see what works need to be carried out.
