REPORT ON QUIZ ‘N’ CHIPS NIGHT at Ashwellthorpe Village Hall

The annual summer Quiz ‘n’ Chips night organised by Ashwellthorpe Village Hall Committee was held at the Village Hall on Saturday 15 August 2015 – a full report appears on the Village Hall > Events Report Page but thanks go to Questionmasters Ray and Sue for researching and asking the questions and verifying the answers, and to John and Morris for collecting all the food from Wymondham. Most importantly, Ray was able to present a cheque for £1,143 to East Anglian Children’s Hospices, received on their behalf by Margaret Neilson, from his collection at various quizzes over the last year. He raised another £93 on the night.

The Quiz was won by Up Dawson’s Creek with 146 points; 2nd Hawaii Five-O with 139 points and joint 3rd were the Bunch of Fives team and R & B team, with 135 points.

Instead of the usual raffle for Village Hall funds, an announcement was made by Nick de Spon, Parish Councillor,  that one Defibrillator had been purchased and had been installed at Ashwellthorpe Village Hall and another one was planned for a site in Fundenhall. To this end “The Big 600 Defibrillator Raffle” had been set up and tickets were sold on the night raising £165 – more details elsewhere on our website, but this Raffle continues into October with the Draw being made at the Parish Council Meeting on Tuesday 20 October 2015.

BRITISH LEGION 2014 POPPY APPEAL

This year’s house to house collection in Ashwellthorpe and around the Ashwellthorpe Industrial Estate, together with the other collections mentioned below, raised a total of £592.91, which is an even greater amount than last year’s collection. Thanks are due to the collectors Liz Ball, Carole and Richard Bradford, Annette Bunting, Lin Packer and Jennifer Robbie.

This total sum also included the money contributed by customers and raised from collecting tins in the Kings Head and White Horse public houses and the sum of £50.00 given by Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall Parish Council for the poppy memorial crosses which are placed around Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall War Memorials to honour the memory of each of those lost in the 1st and 2nd World Wars.

But, without the generosity of all the villagers and, indeed, all those who contributed to our Poppy Collection, this vast sum could not have been raised. So, thank you all very much.

2013 BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL – ASHWELLTHORPE and FUNDENHALL

This year’s House to House collection in Ashwellthorpe,  plus other collections mentioned below, raised a total of £563.19 which is a slightly higher amount than last year. Once again thanks must go to the house to house collectors in Ashwellthorpe Liz Ball, Carole and Richard Bradford, Annette Bunting, Lin Packer and Jennifer Robbie.

This total sum also included the money contributed by customers and raised from collecting tins placed in the King’s Head and White Horse public houses and Woodstock Hair Fashions – so thank you! Also included is the donation of £50.00 made by Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall Parish Council for the poppy crosses which are placed beside the Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall War Memorials to honour the memory of those lost in the 1st and 2nd World Wars.

But, without the generosity of all the villagers and, indeed, all those who contributed to our Poppy Collection, this vast sum could not have been attained. Thank you all very much.

LAW ABIDING CITIZENS BY DAY – PIRATES BY NIGHT!!

This year the Wreningham pantomime ‘Treasure island’ will see honest, law abiding citizens taking to the stage as hostage-taking, thieving pirates led by Raf Silver as Long John Silver.

The action takes them from ‘The Admiral Benbow’ in Plimsole,  to the Spanish Main aboard the Hispaniola (complete with talking figurehead) following ‘the map’ in search of Blackbush’s treasure.  Landing on a desert island, they encounter female natives led by Queen Tittycaca, played by last year’s director Val Keel , and who have their own unsavoury reason for preventing them from leaving.

The pantomime has been written and directed by Ashwren Drama Group member Bob McClenning who elaborated on his show: “I’ve always been a fan of ‘Treasure Island’ and all of its characters and during our last production it dawned on me that we already had the principal character in Raf Silver who I believe is directly related to Long John himself.

I swallowed a large dose of creative juices and started to write.   We have the cream of local talent acting their socks off and with the usual and unusual Dame and Principal Boy looking simply gorgeous, the production gives a laugh a minute with great visual gags and enough grown-up humour to ensure that it will give everyone a great night out.  As ever, we will be the final panto of the season making sure that the best is kept  ‘til last.”

Treasure Island is showing at Wreningham Village Hall on Thursday 16th, Friday 17th and Saturday 18th February at 7.30 pm, with a matinee on Saturday 18th February at 2 pm.  Tickets cost £6, concessions £5 and children £4 except for Saturday evening when all tickets are £6, and are available from Christine Minns on 01508 488123.  Details on www.wreningham.org

Do the pirates find Blackbush’s treasure?   Does Squire Trelawney, played by Andrew Gibbons, take a short walk off a long plank?  And what is the natives’ “House Special”?  Travel with us aboard the Hispaniola and find out.

We will be supporting local charities Star Throwers and East Coast Truckers
