You may remember the appeal made in January 2016 by the Ashwellthorpe Village Hall Committee for Community Chest tokens to be collected from the Eastern Daily Press newspaper scheme in the hope of gaining a grant towards the purchase of new chairs for the Village Hall. Unfortunately this bid was unsuccessful but with 2000 tokens collected by villagers and friends, it is good to hear from Carol Bushell, Chair of the Committee, that the spare tokens from this bid were passed to two local playgroups giving them enough to make their applications – both were successful and each was awarded £200 towards their projects.
The Village Hall is now going to make another application for funding for the chairs and, therefore,
during MAY 2016 can you help by once again collecting these Community Chest tokens. The Chest box will be in the Village Hall or tokens can be posted through Carol’s letterbox at 117 The Street, Ashwellthorpe.

The door-to-door collection in Ashwellthorpe, including the Industrial Estate, and the static collecting boxes in the King’s Head and White Horse Public Houses, raised £515.16 this year. To this amount should be added the £50.00 from Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall Parish Council for the memorial poppy crosses commemorating each man named on the Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall War Memorials. This made the total raised £565.16. Thank you everyone in the village who contributed to this magnificent sum, to mine hosts and customers of the two public houses and to the collectors – Liz Bell, Carole and Richard Bradford, Annette Bunting, Lin Packer and Jennifer Robbie.

The Big 600 Defibrillator Raffle
The annual summer Quiz ‘n’ Chips night organised by Ashwellthorpe Village Hall Committee was held at the Village Hall on Saturday 15 August 2015 – a full report appears on the Village Hall > Events Report Page but thanks go to Questionmasters Ray and Sue for researching and asking the questions and verifying the answers, and to John and Morris for collecting all the food from Wymondham. Most importantly, Ray was able to present a cheque for £1,143 to East Anglian Children’s Hospices, received on their behalf by Margaret Neilson, from his collection at various quizzes over the last year. He raised another £93 on the night.
The Quiz was won by Up Dawson’s Creek with 146 points; 2nd Hawaii Five-O with 139 points and joint 3rd were the Bunch of Fives team and R & B team, with 135 points.
Instead of the usual raffle for Village Hall funds, an announcement was made by Nick de Spon, Parish Councillor, that one Defibrillator had been purchased and had been installed at Ashwellthorpe Village Hall and another one was planned for a site in Fundenhall. To this end “The Big 600 Defibrillator Raffle” had been set up and tickets were sold on the night raising £165 – more details elsewhere on our website, but this Raffle continues into October with the Draw being made at the Parish Council Meeting on Tuesday 20 October 2015.
This year’s house to house collection in Ashwellthorpe and around the Ashwellthorpe Industrial Estate, together with the other collections mentioned below, raised a total of £592.91, which is an even greater amount than last year’s collection. Thanks are due to the collectors Liz Ball, Carole and Richard Bradford, Annette Bunting, Lin Packer and Jennifer Robbie.
This total sum also included the money contributed by customers and raised from collecting tins in the Kings Head and White Horse public houses and the sum of £50.00 given by Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall Parish Council for the poppy memorial crosses which are placed around Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall War Memorials to honour the memory of each of those lost in the 1st and 2nd World Wars.
But, without the generosity of all the villagers and, indeed, all those who contributed to our Poppy Collection, this vast sum could not have been raised. So, thank you all very much.
This year’s House to House collection in Ashwellthorpe, plus other collections mentioned below, raised a total of £563.19 which is a slightly higher amount than last year. Once again thanks must go to the house to house collectors in Ashwellthorpe Liz Ball, Carole and Richard Bradford, Annette Bunting, Lin Packer and Jennifer Robbie.
This total sum also included the money contributed by customers and raised from collecting tins placed in the King’s Head and White Horse public houses and Woodstock Hair Fashions – so thank you! Also included is the donation of £50.00 made by Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall Parish Council for the poppy crosses which are placed beside the Ashwellthorpe and Fundenhall War Memorials to honour the memory of those lost in the 1st and 2nd World Wars.
But, without the generosity of all the villagers and, indeed, all those who contributed to our Poppy Collection, this vast sum could not have been attained. Thank you all very much.
