The Rededication of St Nicholas’, Fundenhall
The Flower Festival at the church acted as a sort of overture to the Service of Rededication that took place on Pentecost Sunday, May 23rd. Unhappily illness prevented the Rector from attending the rededication which was performed by the Rt. Reverend Graham James, Bishop of Norwich.
The service was lead by our Assistant Minister, Rev. Jenny Cooper. The prayers and Collect were read by Mrs Margaret Smith who with her husband Hedley cared for the church for many years before they left the village. The Benefice Choir conducted by Ruth Brett sang an anthem by John Rutter before the Bishop gave the address based on the New Testament reading from the First Book of Peter. He said that an ancient church like ours stands as a living testament to the faith of local people over the centuries.
We are very grateful to Mr Antony Jarrold who played the newly-installed Wurlitzer organ.
Mrs Dianne Burridge, churchwarden, thanked the numerous people who had made the restoration possible and carried it out with such care. Both our architect, Ruth Blackman, and our builder, Stephen Capper, were amongst the congregation which overflowed the church into the sunny churchyard.
After the service the Bishop stayed to chat to the congregation. Refreshments were served in a marquee in the spacious meadow to the south of the church which Mr Robert Bothway has given to serve as a car park. The Saturday and Sunday were days of perfect weather, warm and sunny, which will help the occasion to stay in the memories of all who attended.
