Local groups meeting for leisure activities
Ashwren players
The 2011 Pantomime will be “Jack and the Beanstalk” and will take place on Friday and Saturday, 25 and 26 February 2011, at Wreningham Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. each evening. BUT there is also a Matinee performance at 2.00 p.m. on Saturday 26 February. Tickets are now on sale from Christine on 01508 488123 – Adults £6.00; Child £4.00; Concession £5.00 except for the Saturday night 7.30 p.m. performance when all tickets will cost £6.00.
“Jack and the Beanstalk” – no fewer than two-thirds of the cast are aged 13 or under and all have speaking parts but the panto also features a golden egg-laying chicken and Bluebell the Cow. It was written especially for the Players by Gordon Spalding and is under the artistic directorship of Val Keel; unusual features also include red marrows, blue tomatoes and green strawberries along with magic beans and a huge beanstalk of course. Traditional dancing, singing and bright costumes are all included along with Nursie Gertie’s jokes and an appearance of a GREAT OGRE!
Any profits made will go to the charity which Ashwren Playes are supporting this year – the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Cardiac Department’s new initiative “Sparks for Hearts” which is a method of electrical heart treatment.

Shuffleboard Club
The next Competition Night will be on

The club entered its fourth year on 1 July 2010 and as from the 7th, the evening will start at 8.00 p.m., and continue until 9.30 p.m. EXCEPT for Competition Night which is always held on the last Wednesday of each month. On Competition Nights we will start at 7.30 p.m. to enable all possible matches to take place. The fee will remain at £2.00 per person per night for the time being to take into account the higher Village Hall hire fees and the lower number of club members at present.

Competition Night Reports – See Leisure > Events Write Ups Page for all the details
The Shuffleboard Club held its first monthly competition night on Wednesday 27 February 2008 in the Village hall from 19.30 to 21.30; thereafter the monthly competiton nights will be held on the last Wednesday of every month. The charge will be the usual £2.00 per head.
For the format of each competition night See Leisure > Events Write Ups etc.
The Club got off to a great start with 18 people at the first Club Night on Wednesday 4 July 2007 and is continuing to be enjoyed by the players. 8 players at a time can use the two courts available whilst the others relax, watch, make observations on the tactics and standard of play – both humorous and serious, tongue-in-cheek and constructive – and talk about many things. Games are now played for 8 ends, usually doubles, so that everyone can make a real match of their game and further ideas of having an end of year trophy match (singles and/or doubles) are sometimes discussed. The two display scoreboards and two adjustable-length cues which were paid for by a third loan from a village family are now well in use.
So every Wednesday evening from 19.30 to 21.30 is the time, the Village Hall is the place and £2.00 a head is the price – All welcome – hope to see you there!

Table Tennis
The Table Tennis Club meets on Monday evenings with the exception of Bank Holidays, in Ashwellthorpe Village Hall at 8 p.m. and new members are always welcome. The standard of play ranges from the brilliant to the bizarre – often from the same player – so anyone is welcome from beginners to experts. The Club provides bats and balls so if you don’t have your own kit, all you need bring is a pair of trainers; there are two tables in play during the evening, one of them almost new. There is no Club subscription, but there is a charge of £1.00 per head per evening to pay for the hire of the Hall and the supply of balls.

Whether you are starting from scratch or reviving the remembered skills of a lost youth, or anything in between, just turn up any Monday and give it a try – good company, good exercise and, often enough, a good laugh!
